USA Grad Trip 2013: New Haven, Connecticut

We woke up early to pick up our rented car after checking out of the hotel. Was fortunate to get a car that was better than we had expected, and off we go! Our roadtrip plan was to travel up North to Maine and slowly make our way back to New York again, covering the states in between. Then we would take a flight to Florida, then back to New Jersey and NYC.

Took time to appreciate the greenery while on the highway. (:
It's recommended to have a driver who is 25 and older when renting a car. Apparently the insurance premium is lower, and we were fortunate that Joel was old enough. The cars are left-hand drive over there, so driving is slightly confusing. Good thing Joel had some practice while being on exchange for the past few months.

Beside helping in the navigation, I also spent the time in the car making videos, cam-whoring and singing along to the radio. Haha.

Reached New Haven after close to a two-hour drive and the first thing we stumbled upon was Shake Shack! Joel was raving about it and we had initially planned to have it in NYC later on towards the end of the trip. But lo and behold! Shake Shack happened earlier than expected.

The first thing he said was how empty it was, cos the queues in the NYC outlets were super long. Good for us and our growling stomachs!

Got our food in a matter of 5 minutes. I ordered the Shack Burger while he went for the Smoke Shack. Joel recommended the frozen custard which is like ice-cream, but I opted for the frozen custard drink called Fair Shake, which was frozen custard blended with coffee. (I love coffee!) The burgers were good, the portion was not huge, perfect for a small eater like me. I felt that all the ingredients complemented each other nicely. (: And of course it was yummy! People say it's over-rated though. I give it 5 stars because it is the best burger I've ever had!

Our map around the Yale University Campus.

Spring brings beautiful blooms all around.

I've had the fortune of having a short exchange at Cambridge University at Oxford. The campus was unforgettably beautiful, and the Gothic corridors are forever etched in my mind. Seeing the Yale campus brought back those pleasant memories. (:

Besides touring the campus, we stopped by the shopping street (forgot to take pictures cos we were too excited to shop). But besides Urban Outfitters, there wasn't much to buy there. ):

We only spent about 2 hours in New Haven, and then got back on the road again, this time for another three hours. >.<

Finally reached Portland, Maine and checked into our hotel. The front desk recommended some local restaurants along Commercial Street so after freshening up we headed over for dinner.

Randomly chose Gilbert's Chowder House cos we happened to park nearby.

Went for the seafood platter to share. The thing about American food is that they are mostly deep-fried, as are their seafood. I would think that the seafood in Singapore are mostly grilled or pan-fried? The food wasn't fantastic, but the olive rice was tasty, and the scallops big and juicy. Later on into the trip we had better seafood though! (: After dinner we headed back and immediately concussed. Must be the jet-lag!

Will continue updating when I can, cos this weekend Joel and I have a staycation at Capella Singapore! It's our first staycation together and I'm pretty excited cos staying in Sentosa almost feels like it's "overseas". Can't wait! (:
